The occasion for this book's original purpose is stated in the Preface written by W. H. T. Dau . . .

. . . for a number of years individual pastors of the English Synod of Missouri have been urged to publish such sermons as homiletical aids to such pastors as, for want of time or proper equipment, have felt embarrassed when called upon, often on very short notice, to conduct a burial in the English language.
